Home Insulation Grants

An insulation grant can keep your home warm, cut energy bills, and reduce greenhouse gas emission. By improving insulation, you prevent heat loss, keeping your home comfortable in winter and cooler in summer. These grants provide support for insulation costs helping you save money annually while also being more energy efficient and eco-friendly.

ECO4 Scheme

ECO4 Scheme is the fourth phase of Energy Company Obligation (ECO), which aims to help those families who cannot afford upgrading their home heating and insulation. A key objective of the ECO4 scheme is to improve the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings of homes. Improving EPC ratings makes homes more energy-efficient, which lowers energy bills and helps protect the environment.
The ECO4 Scheme has made a significant impact in the UK. These installations help families stay warm, reduce home’s energy waste, and cut down on carbon emissions. So far, it has led to the installation of:

Great British Insulation Scheme

The Great British Insulation Scheme (formerly ECO+) was initiated in late March 2023, and in its first year after the launch, over 11,600 insulation measures had been installed in 9,400 homes. GBIS focuses on improving the energy efficiency of homes that do not qualify for the ECO4 scheme. With a £1 billion budget, this initiative aims to help about 300,000 households across the UK to reduce fuel poverty and lower carbon emissions. Unlike ECO4’s ‘whole-house approach, Great British Insulation Scheme typically provides just one type of insulation per home. It mainly covers loft and cavity wall insulation, which can save households up to £300 annually.

Insulation Covered under the UK Grants

Two main areas where insulation minimises up to 60% heat loss include loft or attic areas and cavity walls. The grants from the UK government mainly targets these two areas to improve EPC rating of your property.

You can add a new or upgrade old loft insulation through the ECO4 and GBIS grants.

Material: Wool glass and polystyrene

Eligibility

  • Your home has a timber roof structure.
You live in a top-floor flat with a pitched roof structure.
  • The pitched roof area should be clean and empty for adding insulation.
  • You haven’t insulated the loft before, or the existing old insulation is less than 100mm thick.
  • Your old insulation is yellowish or pink, which shows it’s outdated.
  • Replace it with newer insulation, typically in dark grey or brown.

Insulating the cavity between your external walls helps keep heat inside during the winter and prevents heat from entering in the summer.

Material: polystyrene Beads

Eligibility

  • Your home is  old, with a cavity space in the external walls.
  • The external walls are made of equally-sized bricks, indicating a cavity.

Insulate your home’s internal & external walls to retain heat at home in winters and stop penetrating your home in summer.

Material: Mineral wool, expanded polystyrene

Eligibility

  • Homes with solid walls or uninsulated walls are prioritised, as they tend to lose more heat.
  • The home must have either no insulation or inadequate insulation to qualify for the grants.
  • Solid wall properties or homes without cavity walls are often targeted for external wall insulation.
  • Internal wall insulation is more common for properties where external work is impractical, such as heritage or listed buildings.
  • had cavity wall insulation before.

Loft Insulation Grants

Frequently Asked Questions

The Great British Insulation Scheme is a new government grant run by Ofgem, which was previously named as ECO+. It aims to improve the least energy-efficient homes in Great Britain, reduce energy bills, and fight fuel poverty.

You may qualify for GBIS if your home has an EPC rating of E or below. You may also get it if you live in a property within Council Tax Bands A–D in England or A–E in Scotland & Wales. Both homeowners and private tenants can freely apply.
GBIS mainly covers loft, cavity wall, external wall, and internal wall insulation. Though the right type depends on your property type and current insulation level. A certified surveyor confirms this after a free home survey.
It is very simple. You just have to fill out an online eligibility form or contact an approved provider. And if you qualify, they will arrange a free home survey and install the most suitable insulation for your property.
